Week 1 at Palgrave

16-May-2016

We have moved base from the farm to Caledon Equestrian Park http://www.caledonequestrianpark.com/
The set up is pretty amazing with 2 outdoor jumper rings, one indoor jumper ring and three hunter rings. Each has their own warm up ring, plus an extra flatting ring and lunging ring, all with fibre footing. There is a couple of big name riders here including Ian Millar, Conor Swail and Beth Underwood. The show is a 2 star show and runs over three weeks. On Monday is a break and then we have classes from Tuesday to Sunday. The weekend's classes are only for junior and amateur with the exception of a Grand Prix Saturday and a modified Grand Prix Sunday.  This weeks Grand Prix was won by Conor Swail. I also see that Quite Cassini who was shown by Ross Smith in NZ is at the show.

At the show I have a couple of horses I get to show and then I have to work in the horses for the clients, still riding 9 horses most days. Most of the client horses get flatted by myself in the morning and then show later that day. Some of the hunters especially need a lot of work (several rides or lunges) to have them nice and settle for the hunter ring. This week I showed VDLS (Viddles) 5 classes up to 1.10m and was clear in every round except one.  I also showed Ladyplane (Levi) and was clear in the 1.15m and the 1.25m. It was exciting to ride her in the Grand Prix ring and get some great experience riding challenging technical tracks. So a great start to the first week. Our hunter horses have also have a lot of success this week including Figero who was Champion Baby Green Hunter.

At the show we are all in camper vans, I am sharing a camper with Karolyn and Suzanne (the two girls from the stables).  We eat out, every night! Something I am definitely not used to. So I am trying to watch my waistline as I have to fit into my bridesmaid dress for my sisters wedding in July!

I am really enjoying myself, it is a very different experience from showing in New Zealand or Germany but a great experience. The team I am working with are really fun and laid back. John has a great calm and relaxed approach to training the horses. His worst flaw has been forgetting to feed me sometimes - not bad for making sure I fit in my bridesmaid dress! Thankfully though this has been resolved and I am back on three meals a day rather than one.

Today I have the day off which is nice considering the warm weather disappeared and we are down to 0 degrees right now and its snowing! So I am off for some time away from the show grounds.

The moose story: So I have been to Canada 4 times now and each time I have come I have wanted to see a moose. I have even been taken by various people to moose spotting areas and never seen one. So from previous trips I concluded that moose are a figment of the Canadians imagination. Hence why I am still on a mission to see one. I have briefed the girls on my mission plan and been told there is a fat chance of seeing one in this part of Canada. Feeling like this goal will not be achieved.

Canadian goal number 2: Stay away from the French fries! And buy a woolly hat, so my ears do not freeze off!!

PS: Not enjoying all the warm photos from back home :)
