Christen Lane

23-Nov-2015

Coming from a non-horsey family in New Zealand’s South Island, Christen didn’t waste any time in establishing herself in her chosen sport.  Representing Otago Southland at the NZPCA National Championships for a number of years, Christen first tasted international success when she captained the winning New Zealand Nations Cup team at the Interpacific Pony Club Exchange in Kentucky, USA.

At the same time, Christen was also making her mark on the horse trials scene and, at only 18, Christen was the leading South Island Young Eventer aboard Allie Cat. Together, Christen and Allie quickly moved up the grades to compete at 3* level, and were on track to compete at Adelaide CCI4* when an unfortunate tendon injury meant that Allie had to be retired. Luckily the beloved Allie went on to form the foundation of the Bellewood breeding programme and has produced three outstanding foals.

Fortunately Christen’s talent for identifying and developing horses also meant she wasn’t without a top mount for long.  With Tandarra Sweet As Christen was once again crowned the leading South Island Young Eventer, and went on to win the South Island Three Day Championship and twice the South Island One Day Championship.

After completing a Bachelor of Science at Otago University, Christen moved north to concentrate on her riding career.  Auckland has proved the ideal location, as Christen and her team have moved from strength to strength.  Major successes to

date include winning the Bell Tea Super League Series, and winning both the Puhinui Three Day Event CCI3* and the CIC3* National One Day Championship aboard Tandarra Sweet As in 2011.   This success was recognized when Christen was selected to represent New Zealand on the Senior Trans-Tasman Team in 2012.

Sweetie4-1

Having been sidelined by an accident in 2013, Christen is now targeting the Rolex CCI4* in Kentucky 2015.  This is a key step towards Christen’s ultimate goal of representing New Zealand at Olympic and World Equestrian Games level.

As well as pursuing her own success, Christen is also committed to supporting the grassroots of the sport.  This commitment has led her to take on roles as the Head Coach at Bombay Pony Club and Equestrian Coach at Diocesan School for Girls in Auckland. Christen is also the elected riders representative on the Eventing New Zealand Board, and a founding committee member of the Event Riders Association of New Zealand.
