Struggling For Closure
Chief -- Mon, 02-Nov-2015
On many levels, I found this article incredibly difficult to write. Several of the world’s top and highly respected event riders are currently hospitalised or incapacitated from the result of serious head and neck injuries received while competing their horses. This has at the very least interrupted the direction of their UK event season, the all-important one leading up to Rio Olympics 2016. I too suffered a serious life changing head injury many years ago, so the subject matter was close. But here we are talking about a vibrant young girl, twenty years old, her carefree life filled with hope and great prospects all ahead of her. In a split second,....
Call the Farrier
iSpyHorses -- Sun, 05-May-2019
Horses come with hooves, and with hooves, come farriers. Most of us adore our farriers and of course we can’t own horses without them. But engaging them is often a costly business. Never fear though because here we have provided you with some great DIY ideas and advice that will better your farrier experiences and cut costs.
To make sure that you get your money’s worth, you should always request that on the farrier’s arrival they train your horse to lift its feet. Never feel bad or concerned when your horse moves about and kicks out. You’re paying your farrier a lot of money and handling....
Group One Hopes For Cambridge Couple
patrickthompson -- Wed, 19-Aug-2015
Success on the opening day of the spring carnival at Hastings will fuel ambitions of a first Group One victory for a new husband and wife training partnership. David and Emma-Lee Browne are hoping for a winning performance from Blizzard on August 29 to warrant return trips to the carnival.
“He’ll run in the open mile and if he wins, and he would need to, we would like to have a crack at the Windsor Park Plate,” co-trainer Emma-Lee Browne said. “After that there are a few different options to try and get him back for the Livamol Classic.”
From riding at a the track as a teen, Browne has been in the industry for a long time. She began....
Make it or break it.

Ones ability to successfully manage a horse’s fitness for competition is an important aspect to being a knowledgable horseman. However, are there too many riders that aren’t knowledgeable enough in this field of expertise or do they just not pay it enough attention? According to Michael Jung, fitness work is the most important aspect to a horse’s training. So why are so many riders concentrating on perfecting their dressage for an extra 2% instead of perfecting their fitness? When… if they put the same amount of energy into their fitness work, they may complete a cross country inside the time and still front up to show jump the following day. We....
The Great New Zealand Thoroughbred
penelopelockett -- Fri, 25-Sep-2015
Is the German ‘purpose bred’ eventer taking control over the once dominant thoroughbred eventing scene? It has come to my attention that the last thoroughbred to win gold at the Olympics was Blyth Tait aboard Ready Teddy. And if any of you follow the eventing circuit, you’ll come to note that Ready Teddy has been deceased for some years now, with this success occurring in 1996. In 19 years, no thoroughbred has won gold at the Olympics! Is this saying something about the thoroughbred we all used to rave about because they had a heart as big as a gate and the determination to dig in and keep battling? The strength they had to run 15km before even....
When judges get it wrong
penelopelockett -- Thu, 22-Oct-2015
Before I delve deeper into this article, I ask the question, have you ever experienced judges, judging you and your horse in any discipline, getting it very wrong? Whether it be the fence judge marking you down for not jumping their particular jump, giving you a stop when you know you jumped it, or saying you went into a black flag area when you know you did not, it seems these things happen all too often. Why? Perhaps you'll be thinking we are all human and everyone makes mistakes. I am aware this sport runs on the commitment of volunteers, who we are all incredibly thankful to for their support, however, this is an issue in the sport that needs to be....
