Lansing (1986-2015)

A Tribute

Sire of several Grand Prix show jumpers along with advanced eventers, the famous Holsteiner stallion Lansing was a loyal contributor to both the German and New Zealand equestrian industry. Born in 1986 Germany, Lansing served several top horses.  He was later imported into New Zealand in 2003, continuing his service here.

Pip Ffoulkes, together with her husband Paul are the agents for The German Holsteiner Verband here in New Zealand, with Paul originally working in Germany. He began the early training with Lansing, therefore it was a no brainer when his name appeared on the list of stallions that they were able to lease. While in Germany, Lansing competed in many international competitions, and was the grandfather of two champions including that of Silver Creek Validation. Lansing was a German champion himself winning the Bundeschampionat for 5 year olds, competing against 3000 other horses. Under the saddle of Sweden’s Bo Kristoffersen, Lansing went on to have an international career. The Bundeschampionat is the age group championships in Germany, and Lansing was the only champion winner to ever leave the country. 

Every five years the Goldengrove Stud puts forward an application for a new stallion, only receiving those who are almost retired once they reach New Zealand.  Lansing’s time here in New Zealand saw him produce foals from over 150 mares while standing at the Goldengrove Stud.  He suited New Zealand mares perfectly and produced super foals, who excelled in several disciplines. According to stud owners Pip and Paul Ffoulkes, Lansing was a real favorite with those that visited the stud, doing piaffes in his stable when clients were brought in, thus ensuring he was the first stop and the one to be greatly admired.

“He was a real gentleman to handle, a real Ferrari to ride and a proper smooch with my kids,” says Pip.  “He hated being outside and would only tolerate an hour at most.”

The Holsteiner Verband is the Organisation/Breed society that Pip and Paul work for.  There are many Verbands in Germany - the Hannover Verband (Hanoverian horses) the Oldenburg Verband, then you have the Dutch stud books and the Swedish and so on.  Golden Grove Stud, breeds and produces mostly showjumpers, however progeny has also been sold to dressage and eventing homes.  The stallions are all collected and the mares are artificially inseminated.  Frozen semen is sold.  The stallions never cover mares and are kept in the stables in similar conditions to what they have been accustomed to in Europe, 

On the farm, Pip, Paul and their two children, Phoebe 5 and Dylan 9, take on students in the summer to help with the workload and day to day running of the busy stud.  However, Paul and Pip do most of the work themselves. 

There are three mares at the stud due to foal with Lansing and only one two year old colt.  The rest are already sold.  However, there are eight mares all by Lansing in the broodmare paddock.

At age 29, Lansing, the great Holsteiner stallion who contributed so very much, was farewelled.

One of his many admirers is, Carolyn Jolley.  A Lansing enthusiast from way back and longtime well known agent of NZ sport horses, Carolyn believes Lansing has been one of the most influential sires based here in NZ, siring both showjumpers and eventers.  “They have terrific scope over a fence, great temperaments and super movement for the dressage phase,” Carolyn says. 

Black Hawk Farm has tried to purchase as many young Lansing's progeny and bloodlines as possible and have managed to secure one in particular from the Preston family via Claire Wilson who is regarded highly as a potential top eventer and named Lady Hawk. 

Richard Otto, Mark Brady and Carolyn Jolley have just sold Jocelyn Bailey's superstar Lansing, Waitangi Icon offshore.   This horse has been beautifully produced by Dannie Lodder since he was a 4yo and is one of NZ's top young 2* eventers.  Jocelyn Bailey has crossed Lansing successfully over her foundation broodmare lines gaining many fine results.

Jackie Jermyn owns gorgeous 9yo Lansing, Landenfeld, who she has successfully piloted around the 1.50m classes.  This horse is a class act and has incredible scope. He could also event as he is so trainable, and is very brave with beautiful movement.

Larina Dolman has a dream ride with her gorgeous 8yo Kiwi Lansing. There were not many classes this talented duo did not win last season in the 7yo series. This included the 7yo Horse of the Year Title.

Katie Laurie and Sheena Ross own the hugely talented stallion Dunstan Casebrooke Lomond aka Sparky, a crowd favorite. This gorgeous son of Lansing will carry on the bloodlines of his influential father and has been produced carefully for the future.

Sharleen Workman from Xtreme Sport Horses in Otaki has the gorgeous daughter of Lansing, Lanstar Xtreme aka Pixie.  When approached to sell Pixie as a potential dream eventer, Sharleen laughed and said, “No way.  You can't have this one!”

This foundation mare is by Lansing out of the classy mare is jumping successfully in the age classes.  This foundation mare of Sharleen's is by Lansing out of the hugely classy Cats Whiskers by Distlefink.  Pixie is now producing stunning youngsters.
