Fern is a 15 year old 14.2hh chestnut mare. She has been ridden most of her life as a hunter and did full wire with her previous two owners. I have hunted her myself but stick to spas. I have stuck to eventing with her and the occasional show jumping day, as did her last owner. She has never stopped at anything I’ve faced her at and is very bold, my main reason for having kept her so long. Her only down points are the fact that she is quite hot at times and struggles with dressage. She is very much a working horse and we think she was not bred to be in the ring because of her heavy set but however has handled the challenge well and loves to please.
Her dressage tests are usually between 40-50% and I saw improvement with training and use of correct calming supplements. She prefers a gentle hand and leg while doing flat work but is not sensitive while jumping.
The show jumping part of eventing has never troubled her and she has never had a jumping fault. She is quite forward but eventually got used to her gaits. She has show jumped rounds up to 90cm with me which she handles easily and I have been placed several times. When she is in work she jumps best and I feel she could do rounds of 1m.
Cross country is defiantly her strong suit. She has never stopped on me and I have practiced up to training level (90cm) but competed her mainly at pre-training (80cm). She is very bold and never hesitates with her only faults being time ones for being too quick at times but she has improved immensely with us only having 3 time faults at our last outing. We have competed at a couple ESNZ horse trials In the past year and I have taken her to many pony club ODE’s when I was younger as well.
Fern has been used on farms a lot and my favourite thing to do with her is hack. She is fine around stock and has been used to herd before by my self and previous owners. She is her calmest on the farm and hacks out nicely. She has a brisk walk and keeps up with the group. She is also fine on the roads and I often ride her along the Main Street.
She is fine to worm, trim/shoe and give injections. She is a very good floater or trucker and is always the easiest to load. Fern is currently bare foot as I have never felt any reason to shoe her as she has sturdy pony feet and has always been very sure footed and I would prefer her to go to a home where this would be continued.
I feel she would best suit someone who just wants a nice safe horse to ride and do the odd job on the farm and go to the occasional show. She would be best for someone returning to riding or a confident teenager who wants a bold pony to get their confidence up on. She is NOT suited to an inexperienced rider or family!!! Someone who has experience with riding hotter horses would find her easy to ride or someone with a bit of guts willing to try something new. I am only selling her as i have been a bit too tall for her for a long time but have held onto her because I trust her.
Her ESNZ results can be viewed by searching her show name Fantastic Miss Fern.
She can be trialed at the right home and is available to view and ride at Solway Showgrounds Masterton.
